Below are a few examples of presentations Mey can give at your next event.

How LGBTQ+ Representation in Cartoons Changes Lives

approx. 45 mins

From Adventure Time and Steven Universe to She-Ra and the Princesses of Power and The Owl House, kids’ cartoons are getting queerer and queerer. As one of the leading journalists covering LGBTQ+ media, Mey will discuss milestones in queer representation in cartoons, trailblazers in the field, and the impact this has on real people’s lives.

Mey will read from her them.us essay of the same name:

“…I want my kids to know that their mom is a bruja and that their abuela is the best tamale maker in L.A. County and that their ancestors could talk to ghosts and make brooms stand on their bristles and smell when someone was pregnant. I want my kids to know that their family comes from El Valle de Guadalupe, and that La Virgen watches over us and favors us.

But my children won't be my flesh and blood. And if magic is passed down through blood, they won’t get either from me.”

On Trans Motherhood, and My Reality of Never Having Biological Children

approx. 15 mins

Queer Superheroes in Comics, TV, Movies, and Beyond

approx. 30 mins

People have always looked to superheroes to inspire them to be their best selves. Now more than ever, LGBTQ+ characters are joining the fray. From the Marvel Cinematic Universe to The CW to Harley Quinn, Mey will discuss queer representation of superheroes and what their inclusion means to the community.
